Earlier, we reported that H Vinoth and Vijay's Jana Nayagan might hit theatres at the same time as the rerelease of Venkat Prabhu and Ajith Kumar's Mankatha. While Jana Nayagan's destiny remains to be seen, Vijay's 2016 film Theri, directed by Atlee, is set to hit theatres again on January 23, the same day as the Mankatha rerelease. A while ago, Theri producer Kalaippuli S Thanu of V Creations announced the new date for the film after its postponement from a scheduled Pongal rerelease.
The postponement means another box-office clash between an Ajith Kumar film and a Vijay starrer, albeit one involving their older films. There have been multiple Vijay and Ajith films to release simultaneously in theatres, a cinematic tradition that dates back to 1996 with the box office seeing a clash between the former's Coimbatore Mappillai and the latter's Vaanmathi. The last time their films clashed at the box office is in 2023, when both Varisu and Thunivu hit theatres in the Pongal festival season.
The makers of Theri are also dropping a new trailer for the film tomorrow. Mankatha's makers also released a new trailer the other day.
Just in case you are yet to watch it, the film follows a former police officer who leaves his violent past and leads a more peaceful life under a new identity. However, when his past catches up with him and starts to affect his near and dear ones, he must take action. The film also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson, Baby Nainika, J Mahendran, Prabhu, Raadhika Sarathkumar, and Rajendran, among others.
