The release of Vijay's last film, before his retirement from acting, Jana Nayagan is in limbo, as a review for the film's certification is under legal contention. The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court stayed an order passed by Justice PT Asha, which ordered the CBFC to issue the certification for Jana Nayagan. The next hearing for the case is scheduled for January 21.
Sun Pictures earlier announced that Ajith Kumar's 2011 film, Mankatha, will rerelease in theatres on January 23. After teasing a rerelease for weeks, the production house confirmed the news, making the film one of the first rereleases of 2026.
With the makers of Jana Nayagan reportedly appealing to the Supreme Court to challenge the CBFC's move to review the film's certification, the next plausible date for the film's release can be narrowed down to a few dates, one of them being January 23.
If all goes well for Jana Nayagan and the makers decide to release the film on January 23, it will be the first time since 2023, that a Vijay film and an Ajith film has had a simultaneous release. In 2023, Vijay's Varisu faced off against Ajith's Thunivu.
Vijay and Ajith's film have had simultaneous releases more than 10 times, even before 2023.
Jana Nayagan was set to release on January 9, when it got mired in legal contention. The film is directed by H Vinoth, who previously directed Ajith in Nerkonda Parvai (2019), Valimai (2022), and Thunivu (2023). Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Bobby Deol also star.
