Following the postponement of Vijay's Jana Nayagan, there is news coming in about the release of director Mohan G's Draupathi 2, starring Richard Rishi and Rakshana Induchoodan. Earlier today, Mohan G himself announced that the film would hit theatres on the Pongal Day and that its trailer would release on the evening of January 10, Saturday. The producer of the film, Netaji Productions' Chola Chakravarthy, was initially planning a late January release for the historical drama, which serves as a sequel to 2020's Draupathi, because of Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi being scheduled to hit theatres on January 09 and 10, respectively. Now that Jana Nayagan has missed its January 09 release and faces uncertainty over its release, it has opened a slot, which other films are planning to take.
Netaji Productions is backing the film alongside GM Film Corporation. The film is set against the Hoysala Kingdom, ruled by Veera Vallalar III. It explores the great courage and resistance shown by the Kadavarayas against the Hoysala dynasty and the turbulence stemming from the Mughals' invasion of the state. Announcing the release date, Mohan G called it a story that explores "the history of our land" and said that it explores "what has been recorded in history for this generation". The filmmaker also asked the audience to support his film, as it is set to have its festival release.
The film also stars Natti, YG Mahendran, Saravana Subbiah, Bharani (Naadodigal and Angammal fame), Vela Ramamoorthy, Siraj Johnny, Dinesh Lamba, Ganesh Gaurang, Divi, Devayani Sharma, and Arunodayan.
On the technical front, Draupathi 2 has music by Ghibran, cinematography by Philip R Sundar, editing by Devaraj, stunts by Action Santosh, and art direction by Kamalnathan.
