Karthi's Vaa Vaathiyaar, directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, which was set for release in December last year, was postponed indefinitely owing to financial constraints faced by production company Studio Green. But the film may release sooner than expected as it has officially received its censor certificate with a U/A certificate. Speculations are rife that the film may hit theatres for Pongal if Vijay's Jana Nayagan misses the festive window. However, an official announcement is yet to be made by the makers.
The much-anticipated political comedy drama film was expected to release for December 5 and was later scheduled to release in theatres on December 12. A day ahead of it, however, the film's release was stayed by the Madras High Court which had ordered producer KE Gnanavel Raja to repay his dues of Rs 21,78,50,000 that he owed to K Arjunlal Sunderdas and noted that until the dues are repaid, Vaa Vaathiyaar's release will be stayed. It later eyed a Christmas eve release on December 24, which coincided with late CM and actor MG Ramachandran's death anniversary. But that too, was missed.
With censor owes plaguing Vijay's Jana Nayagan, the the team of Vaa Vaathiyaar are reportedly aiming to bring the Karthi-starrer to the screens to make the most out of the festive holidays.
Vaa Vaathiyar is Nalan Kumarasamy's third feature venture after Soodhu Kavvum (2013) and Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum (2016).
The cast of Vaa Vaathiyaar also includes Krithi Shetty as the female lead, Sathyaraj, Rajkiran, Anand Raj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran, GM Sundar, Ramesh Thilak, PL Thenappan, Vidhya Borgia, Nivas Adthitan, Madhur Mittal, among others.
While Vijay's Jana Nayagan was expected to hit theatres on Friday, uncertainty over its release started growing after it failed to procure a censorship certificate, even until Tuesday. Following this, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions moved to the Madras High Court. After hearing arguments from both the makers of the film and CBFC, Justice PT Asha announced that a judgment on the case will be passed on Friday.
