On Saturday, we reported about the makers of Dorothy dropping the first single from director Karthik Subbaraj's upcoming film. Titled 'Kalyana Virundhu,' the song has composition and lyrics by Ilaiyaraaja. Sharing the song on social media, Karthik Subbaraj wrote, "Raaja Sir music is always my Soul Therapy and working with him was a lifetime dream... And so this moment is feeling very very special to me Ilaiyaraaja Sir."
The upbeat number is reminiscent of songs from the legendary music director's filmography from the 1980s onwards. The makers of the film describe it as "A Raaja Sambhavam." This probably explains director Venkat Prabhu's response to the song. Quote-tweeting Karthik Subbaraj's post, the Mankatha and Maanaadu filmmaker wrote, "Thanks for bringing the OG back Karthik. This one is gonna be a blast in theatres like the good old days."
Dorothy stars Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth in the lead roles. The story follows Karthi and Subbu, longtime friends who have grown up in an unforgiving village setting in Tamil Nadu. With Dorothy (Keerthy Suresh) facing misfortune, the story turns unexpectedly, changing the friends' survival to "a harsh, scorched-earth reality shaped by rigid patriarchal hierarchies and everyday violence," according to information from TIFF. As reported earlier, the film is set for its world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The plotline from TIFF also mentions that Dorothy has references to Bruce Lee's action and Howard Hawks' physical comedy. The upcoming film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor, Achin Jain. Sikhya Entertainment and Dhammam Films are the production banners for the film, with Sikhya also serving as a presenter alongside Jio Studios.
The film's technical team also includes cinematographer S Thirunavukkarasu, editor Ganesh Siva, stunt director Dinesh Subbarayan, and costume designer Praveen Raja. The film is slated for a September 25 release in theatres worldwide.
