Born Sankaramanchi Janaki on December 12, 1931, the actor entered films with the Telugu drama Shavukaru in 1950, directed by LV Prasad. The film went on to give her the screen name by which she would become famous. Over the years, she established herself across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, appearing in more than 400 films.

Her association with filmmaker K Balachander produced some of her most remembered performances. Her career also included work in Hindi cinema.
