Magudam, which marks the directorial debut of Vishal, also starring him in the lead, witnessed a modest increase in its box office collections on its second day. The film, which opened to Rs 0.68 crore gross in India on Friday, recorded Rs 0.80 crore on Saturday, registering a 17.6 per cent day-on-day growth.
According to trade estimates on Sacnilk, Magudam has collected a total gross of Rs 1.48 crore in India after two days, while its net collection stands at Rs 1.30 crore. The film has recorded these collections across 3,063 shows. The Saturday numbers also saw a slight improvement in audience turnout. The film's occupancy increased from 15 per cent on Friday to 18.8 per cent on Saturday. However, the number of shows fell from 1,748 on Day 1 to 1,315 on Day 2.
On Friday, Karnataka emerged as the film's strongest market with a gross collection of Rs 0.38 crore, followed by Tamil Nadu with Rs 0.20 crore. Kerala contributed Rs 0.07 crore, while the rest of India accounted for Rs 0.03 crore. While the Saturday growth is a positive sign, Magudam continues to operate at relatively low levels at the box office. The film will be hoping for a stronger Sunday turnout to build momentum and improve its overall weekend performance.
The film was initially helmed by Ravi Arasu, who exited the movie due to creative differences with Vishal. The actor then took over to direct the rest of the film. Ravi Arasu is now credited with the story of the film. Magudam follows a peaceful man who is forced to embrace his violent legacy while protecting his son from some of South India's most dangerous gangsters. Vishal dons three distinct looks in the film while playing characters: Linga and Kirubakaran.
Upon release on Friday, the film was met with mixed and negative reviews. It also clashed with Suriya's Vishwanath & Sons. It also stars Dushara Vijayan and Anjali in prominent roles.
An excerpt from our CE review of the film reads, "Much like Vishal's Kirubakaran caught in the strife between two warring gangs, the film too is caught between an engrossing mass masala film and the actor's political launchpad. From being a meek hero with recognisable problems like EMI and a car, to the plasticity with which he is made the saviour, the film defies even the template of a nobody rising above the ranks. Magudam ends up being a heavy crown on a shaky head."
Jayaprakash, John Vijay, Ajay, Vamsi Krishna, Abu Salim, Arjai, Vj Jhansi, Padam Kumar, Sabhumon and others star in supporting roles in Magudam. Pon Parthiban has written the dialogues for the film, along with Anandh Kumaresan writing the dialogues in Tamil and Rajesh A Moorthy writing the dialogues in Telugu. The crew of the film includes NB Srikanth as the editor and G Durairaj as the art director. Late director-producer RB Choudary's Super Good Films banner is the producer of Magudam.
