Suriya's Vishwanath and Sons is beginning to show promising signs in the North American market, with the film's USA premiere advance bookings crossing the USD 36,000 mark ahead of its theatrical release. The numbers come with three days still remaining for the premieres, indicating a steady early response to the upcoming Telugu-Tamil bilingual project.
As per tracking data from Venky Box Office, the film has sold close to 2,000 tickets across more than 100 locations, with around 270 shows currently recorded in the USA. The Telugu version has emerged as the stronger contributor so far, accounting for approximately USD 22,600 from 1,250 tickets. The Tamil version, meanwhile, has grossed around USD 13,600 through nearly 770 tickets.
The early overseas numbers will be closely watched given the commercial targets reportedly attached to the film. Trade estimates suggest that Vishwanath and Sons needs to gross around Rs 40 crore from the Telugu states to reach its regional breakeven point, while its worldwide breakeven target across languages is said to be approximately Rs 200 crore.
Directed by Venky Atluri, the film features Suriya as Sanjay Vishwanath, a 42-year-old international pistol shooter and businessman. Mamitha Baiju plays the female lead, with the story revolving around a romance between Sanjay and a Gen-Z woman, with the narrative built around their significant age difference
Vishwanath and Sons marks Atluri's first directorial outing after Lucky Baskhar, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay. The filmmaker previously directed films including Tholi Prema, Rang De and Vaathi before making the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer Lucky Baskhar, which emerged as a major commercial success.
For Suriya, the film follows Karuppu, which marked a significant theatrical success for the actor and helped strengthen his box office standing. Vishwanath and Sons, also starring Radikaa Sarathkumar, Raveena Tandon, Yogi Babu, Nassar, and master Charvik, among others, will open in theatres on August 14.
