Jana Nayagan: Through a statement to the press on Friday (April 24), the South Indian Film Editor's Association (SIFEA), announced that the editor of Vijay's Jana Nayagan, Pradeep E Ragav, has been temporarily suspended on basis of violating the bylaws of the association.
Earlier this month, an investigation by the Chennai Cyber Crime police revealed that the accused in the leak of Jana Nayagan's footage, is a freelance editor who worked on the film. The freelance editor was arrested on charges of illegally exploiting the footage.
The SIFEA subsequently convened for an emergency meeting, on April 17, to discuss the matter.
In the press release, the SIFEA mentions that the suspension is due to the hiring of editors, who aren't members of the SIFEA. They also mention that while Pradeep E Ragav isn't directly responsible for the leak, his suspension is due to the leak happening under his purview.
During this suspension period, the SIFEA states that it won't support editor Pradeep's endeavours, and has urged other film associations to stand by the SIFEA's action.
The SIFEA's move is unprecedented, as even though multiple films have faced the issues due to footage leaks, crew members of such films have not been directly implicated or affected.
Editor Pradeep began his career with the Vishal-starrer Kathakali, and went on to work on films like Comali (2019), Love Today (2022), Star (2023), and most recently in Leader and Love Insurance Kompany.
After it was discovered that the entirety of footage from Vijay's Jana Nayagan, written and directed by H Vinoth, the Chennai Cyber Crime police initially arrested six people and later arrested three people, regarding the leaks. Amongst the three arrested, is the freelance editor, who is the main accused.
Jana Nayagan is Vijay's last film before he retires from acting for a career in politics. Also starring Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, and others, the film features music by Anirudh.
Vijay has contested to represent the Perambur and Tiruchirapalli East in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, for which polling concluded on April 23. Results are expected to be announced on April 4.
