The reported online leak of Jana Nayagan has triggered widespread outrage within the Tamil film industry, even as political overtones begin to dominate the conversation. While actor Vijay has remained silent on the issue so far, sharp allegations from his political camp have added a new dimension to the controversy.
Shortly following the leak, actor-politician Adhav Arjuna, General Secretary of Vijay's TVK, stirred debate by claiming that Union Minister L Murugan and Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin were responsible for the film’s release troubles. “L Murugan and Udhayanidhi are the reason why Jana Nayagan was not released. They are threatening Vijay by releasing this film online. He will not be afraid of all this,” he said.
Amid the escalating controversy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin is reported to have addressed media queries on the issue for the first time on Sunday. Speaking to reporters during a public interaction in Paramakudi, he declined to engage with the issue, saying, “There is no need to answer about this.” When further asked about the allegations involving his son Udhayanidhi, Stalin added, “Is that so?.. I don’t know. I don’t read all the Adhav Arjuna news.”
Notably, this marks the first direct response from Stalin since tensions began brewing between Vijay’s supporters and the ruling establishment over the film’s delay.
The leak came at a time when the film, directed by H Vinoth and believed to be a remake of Bhagavanth Kesari, was already facing delays due to censorship hurdles. Initially slated for a January release, the project has been stuck in a cycle of objections, legal proceedings, and resubmission for certification.
Amid this, the leak of what is believed to be the full film, reportedly carrying an editor’s watermark, has raised serious concerns. Industry insiders have pointed out that such marked copies are typically limited to a small circle, including the lead actor, producer, director, and editor. While some speculation has emerged around this, others suspect the leak could have originated during the censor process, a claim that has surfaced in similar situations in the past. However, the Press Information Bureau denied the same on Saturday.
Jana Nayagan also stars Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, and Narain, among others.
