The season of rereleases is set to continue in Tamil cinema as well. Not long after Kushi, another vintage Vijay film, this time a multistarrer, is set to hit theatres again on November 21 in theatres worldwide. Kalaimamani Award-winning PRO Nikil Murukan announced the news about Friends rerelease earlier this Tuesday. The 2001 film, a remake of writer-director Siddique's Malayalam drama of the same name from 1999, also stars Suriya and Ramesh Khanna in important roles. It will storm to the cinemas in a 4K format with Dolby Atmos sound.
Directed by Siddique himself, the film tells a tale of friendship between three youngsters. When one of them gets into a romantic relationship with a woman, it leads to a misunderstanding and the revelation of a long-held secret that threatens to end their friendship forever. "Some friendships never fade... they just return stronger!" reads the caption for the rerelease announcement post.
The large ensemble cast also includes Vijayalakshmi, Vadivelu, Abhinayashree, Charle, and Radha Ravi, among others. Mukesh, Jayaram, and Sreenivasan star in the Malayalam original as the three friends at the heart of the story.
The Tamil version is one of the commercially successful films from 2001, often considered a 'superhit'. It hit theatres originally as a Pongal release in 2001, alongside the Ajith Kumar starrer Dheena. The film is best remembered for its comedy, Ilaiyaraaja's music, and Suriya and Vijay's performances.
