After earning close to Rs 40 crore at the box office in India, Dhanush's latest directorial Idli Kadai has been witnessing a downward trend, registering just over a crore after its first successful weekend at the box office. After dipping by over 74 per cent in revenue to Rs 1.55 crore on day 6, the drama earned similar numbers on its seventh day. On day 8, the collections dropped further to Rs 1.18 crore, taking its total to Rs 42.88 crore, according to Sacnilk.
Idli Kadai enjoyed a decent opening weekend, earning approximately Rs 45 crore gross India net collections and 54 crore worldwide in its five-day opening weekend. On the opening day alone, the film collected Rs 11 crore. It maintained momentum during the weekend where it earned Rs 18 crore, thanks to positive word-of-mouth reviews for the story and strong performances from Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Rajkiran and Sathyaraj.
However, with Kannada's big budget Kantara prequel Kantara: Chapter 1's release on October 2, the film started facing decrease in box office numbers. Directed by Rishab Shetty, the period drama film has already made waves across the globe, earning over Rs 400 crore worldwide and garnering praise for its impressive visuals, theatrical moments and for narrating a rooted story that audiences could resonate with. It is marching ahead to breach the Rs 500 crore mark, signifying a landmark moment for Kannada as well as Indian cinema.
Idli Kadai revolves around Dhanush as Murugan who is in pursuit of finding his roots and setting up his father's idli shop in their ancestral village after quitting his job at a michelin-star restaurant.
While the film has been receiving positive reviews on the screenplay front, it has been receiving mixed reviews on its predictable storyline. Our CE review of the film read, "Dhanush headlines a warm and fuzzy film that makes us realise that familiarity and comfort are good, but only for a while."
Parthiban and Samuthirakani also star in prominent roles in Idli Kadai. The technical crew comprises Dhanush's frequent collaborator, composer GV Prakash, cinematographer Kiran Koushik, editor GK Prasanna, and art director Jackson. The film is produced by Akash Bhaskaran through his Dawn Pictures banner and Dhanush through his Wunderbar Pictures banner. The film marks Inban Udhayanidhi's (son of Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin) first film credit as a distributor.
