Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj’s latest directorial, Retro, starring Suriya in the lead role, hit theatres on May 1 and opened to middling reviews. Within less than a month, on May 31, the film had its OTT premiere on Netflix. Now, Karthik has revealed that he is trying to get the OTT platform to release a limited series version of Retro after a few months.
Speaking to Baradwaj Rangan of Galatta Plus, Karthik said, “I have been trying to spark a deal with the OTT platform to release a limited series version of Retro, something like an extended cut. It won’t just be deleted scenes. This extended cut would explain the action, emotions and world-building in greater detail. I have nearly four to five episodes, with a runtime of 40 minutes each.”
However, Karthik also said that due to the business aspect, the OTT platform is not agreeing to the same. Speaking about what novelty the extended cut will offer, he further explained, “I was very excited while shooting a few scenes in Retro. This version will have detailed explanations for the cult, the laughter therapy, the religion, etc. I am trying my best to get it out somewhere, but I am not sure how to.”
Apart from Suriya, Retro also stars Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Nasser, Jayaram, Vidhu, and Prakash Raj, among others. In the film, Suriya’s Paarivel Kannan, orphaned and raised by a gangster, in his search for truth, entwines with prophecy and reunites with his long-lost love, Rukmini, amidst treacherous odds. The film is produced by Stone Bench Creations and 2D Entertainment.
