DMK, Nadigar Sangam take action against Radha Ravi for his comments against Nayanthara

The trailer launch of Nayanthara-starrer Kolaiyuthir Kaalam has now become infamous for the controversy surrounding Radha Ravi's irresponsible statements against Nayanthara, and making light of the Pollachi incident and MeToo movement.

Responding to the widespread outrage over his statements, Radha Ravi said to the media, "My comments on Nayanthara have been misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. I do not want to apologise as I strongly believe I've said nothing wrong against her. But at the same time, I feel sorry if my comments had hurt her in any manner. I'm also ready to meet Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan to clarify my statement." He also announced that he'll be resigning from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) after party president, MK Stalin suspended him for his derogatory statements.

Yesterday, members of the film fraternity like Chinmayi, Milind Rau, Vignesh Shivan, Radikaa Sarathkumar, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, and Taapsee Pannu expressed their outrage over the statements of Radha Ravi. Most of them called out the Nadigar Sangam, Producers Union, and the Dubbing Union for letting such a repeat offender go scot-free by not reprimanding his reprehensible behaviour.

In response to such calls, Nadigar Sangam came out with a strongly-worded warning to Radha Ravi. The letter addressed to Radha Ravi, and signed by Nasser, president of the sangam, read,

"Your misogynistic and derogatory comments in the Kolaiyuthir Kaalam audio launch event is very disappointing. The Nadigar Sangam condemns this behaviour. Not just in this event, but it has been a repeat occurrence in your interviews, and other film-related events. Your statements have reached worldwide, and it has brought shame and mental distress to the entire film industry, especially the women. Why haven't you realised the impact of your statements yet? Such derogatory statements not just bring you disrepute, but also makes the general public develop a bad impression on the film industry. However, we expect you to realise your mistakes, and conduct yourself better, and avoid making such vulgar comments in the future. But it should come as a fair warning that if you continue to exhibit such deplorable behaviour, the Nadigar Sangam will have to deal this situation with an iron hand."

A lot more voices from within the film and political fraternity came in support of Nayanthara today.

Actor-politician Khushboo expressed her solidarity in a tweet:

DMK Leader Kanimozhi said, in a tweet, "Every woman has a right to choose her profession. To judge or disrespect a woman's choice is unacceptable. The DMK will not stand for any conduct which offends the rights, dignity and equality of our fellow human beings."

Actor and voice artist Rohini too took to Twitter to point out that she was outsed from the Dubbing Union, of which Radha Ravi is the president. She added that if members of the dubbing union stood with her when she outed him for talking ill of women, there would have been respect for the union committee.
