For a woman who has spent years guiding her eight children through the highs and lows of romance, there is one love story that Bridgerton has largely left in the past. Lady Violet Bridgerton, the family matriarch played by Ruth Gemmell, has often spoken fondly of her late husband, Edmund, whose death continues to shape her life and her approach to love.

Violet's relationship with Edmund has been an important part of the Netflix series, particularly through the memories she shares with her children. The second season offered glimpses of their marriage through Anthony Bridgerton's recollections of his father's death, while later seasons explored Violet's gradual willingness to consider romance beyond her first marriage.

Netflix and Shondaland have now announced a new limited series centred on the love story of a young Violet and Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The untitled spin-off will explore how the couple met and fell in love before becoming the parents of the eight Bridgerton siblings. The announcement was made on October 8, with the makers describing it as an origin story for the family matriarch.

Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will serve as writers, showrunners and executive producers, while Tom Verica will direct. Verica and Betsy Beers will also executive produce the series. The project follows Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the first spin-off from the franchise, which explored the young Queen's relationship with King George III.

Edmund's story is particularly significant to the main series because his death left Violet to raise their children while navigating the expectations of Regency-era society. His death, caused by a bee sting, is also central to Anthony's emotional journey in the second season. The prequel will offer an opportunity to explore the marriage that shaped Violet's understanding of love and influenced the way she encouraged her children to find happiness.

The announcement also comes as the fifth season of Bridgerton is in production in London. The upcoming season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. The sixth season, which will follow Eloise Bridgerton, has also been confirmed.

Based on Julia Quinn's Regency romance novels, Bridgerton follows the romantic lives of the Bridgerton siblings. The series debuted on Netflix in 2020 and has since expanded with multiple seasons and the Queen Charlotte spin-off. The Violet-led project will further explore the history of the family at the centre of the franchise. The limited series has yet to announce its title, cast or release date.
