Sooraj Barjatya, who is back with a new OTT series titled Sangamarmar, is known for changing the landscape of mainstream cinema in 90s with films like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, introducing a hero who prioritised familial relations over rebellion, vulnerability over aggression. In a recent interview, the legendary filmmaker reflected upon how films like Kabir Singh and Animal are the other side of the same coin where Hum Aapke Hain Koun! lies.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Sooraj Barjatya said, “They are representation of the same men. If you look at it, whether it is Kabir Singh, Animal, or Prem, but koi itna pyaar to kare (If only someone could love like this).” Elaborating on his theory, he said, “All of them have come through the journeys of their soul. They have their own upbringing and values. But essentially, it is the power of love. I feel they are two sides of the same coin.
Talking about how a similar theme runs through his show Sangamarmar, the HAHK filmmaker noted, “The hero in Sangamarmar waits for the woman for 25 years even as she is taking care of her responsibilities.”
The filmmaker also addressed how he has always been critiqued for creating unrealistic standards of romance and masculinity, adding, “Every two to three weeks, people tell me such a world does not exist. Girls tell me that their parents want this sort of guy for them, and that they don’t exist anymore. But I say, they continue to exist as always. You just have to find them.”
Now streaming on JioHotstar, Sangamarmar tells the story of a couple whose love has only grown over the 25 years of them being together, even though they are not married. Sheen Savita Das and Saurabh Raaj Jain play the lead roles in the series.
