Antony Perumbavoor has confirmed that L3: Azrael, the third instalment in the Lucifer franchise led by Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is very much on track. Speaking during an interaction with Mohanlal fans on X (formerly Twitter) Spaces ahead of the release of Drishyam 3, Antony put an end to speculation surrounding the future of the franchise. Responding to a fan’s question about whether the third part would happen, the producer said, “Azrael will happen 100 per cent. We should do such films, shouldn’t we? Don’t we need to recover from the exhaustion? Films like these create excitement and movement. We have to make them. It just needs a bit of a gap. Let everything settle down first.”
The confirmation comes amid continued discussions around L2: Empuraan, the second chapter in the franchise, which released in 2025 to massive pre-release hype. While the film emerged as one of Malayalam cinema’s highest-grossing titles ever, conversations about its controversies and inferior reception compared to Lucifer remained active online.
Prithviraj had earlier addressed questions about L3: Azrael during a press interaction for Tovino Thomas-starrer Pallichattambi. Responding to whether the political criticism surrounding Empuraan had affected plans for the third instalment, the actor-director said criticism would never discourage him from making a film. “There are many people who may not have liked Empuraan, but there are also many who want to see the next part,” Prithviraj had said. “Even now, wherever I go, people ask me about L3. As long as that excitement exists, I have the motivation to make it.”
He, however, admitted that scheduling remains the biggest hurdle for the project. “The biggest challenge is finding time. Lalettan’s time is far more valuable than mine, but I still need to set aside a proper schedule for the film. I also have a few other directing commitments and projects I’ve promised producers,” he added.
Written by Murali Gopy, the Lucifer franchise was conceived as a trilogy from the outset. Although the title L3: Azrael was revealed at the end of Empuraan, no official update about the film had emerged until Antony’s latest confirmation.
