Filmmaker Omar Lulu has announced that the title launch event of his upcoming biopic on Indian football legend I M Vijayan, which had been scheduled for April 26 in Thrissur, has been cancelled following the recent fireworks blast in the district that claimed 14 lives.

Sharing the update on social media, Omar said the team had decided to call off the event in view of the tragedy. “We regret to inform you that the title launch event of our IM Vijayan biopic, scheduled for April 26 in Thrissur, has been cancelled. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic blast in Thrissur that claimed 14 precious lives. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking incident. At this moment of grief, we stand in solidarity with everyone impacted. We believe this is not a time for celebration, but for reflection and respect. Further updates regarding the launch will be shared at a later date,” he wrote.

The project, announced earlier this week, is being backed by producers Keshva Ramachandrappa, K Manju and Rajashekar G. Details regarding the cast, including the actor set to portray Vijayan, and the technical crew were expected to be revealed at the launch event.

The forthcoming film is set to chronicle the life of Vijayan, one of Indian football’s most celebrated strikers. Born in Thrissur in 1969, he rose from humble beginnings as a soda seller to captain the India national team between 2000 and 2004. He scored 29 goals in 72 international appearances and won the Indian Player of the Year award three times. He also received the Arjuna Award in 2003 and the Padma Shri in 2025.
