Veteran Gujarati musician and singer Gaurang Vyas, who made a significant contribution to film and folk music, died here early on Thursday following a brief illness and age-related health issues, his family members said. He was 87 years old.
Vyas was a prominent name in Gujarati film, folk and light music. His work carried forward the musical legacy of his father Avinash Vyas, one of the most influential composers associated with Gujarati music.
Gaurang Vyas composed music for Bhavni Bhavai and other films.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his demise, describing him as a renowned musician who had carved out a unique place for himself in the Gujarati music world.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Gaurang Vyas, a renowned musician in the Gujarati music world," Modi said in a post on X. Gaurang Vyas had carried forward the rich musical tradition of his father and made his own mark in Gujarati music, he noted.
"His demise leaves Gujarat feeling the loss of a talented creator. His invaluable contribution to the Gujarati music scene will always be remembered," Modi added. He also offered prayers for the departed soul and condolences to Vyas' family and his "vast legion of fans".
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also mourned Gaurang Vyas' death, calling it an "irreplaceable loss" for the Gujarati music world. He had touched countless hearts during his long musical journey through his contributions to numerous films and countless compositions, Shah said. "His immortal creations like 'Dikri To Parki Thapan' will keep his memories forever alive," he added.
