Since the release of the first look of Ramayana: Part 1 there have been lots of discussions and debates over its lead Ranbir Kapoor playing the role of Lord Rama. While many pointed out his previous roles and his dietary preferences to back why he shouldn’t play the character, others have hailed his acting skills and his appearance in the film’s trailer to state that he makes the perfect fit.
Now, Shiv Sagar, the grandson of filmmaker Ramanand Sagar who helmed the iconic 1987 TV show Ramayan has given his opinion on Ranbir’s casting in the film. In an interview with Variety India, Shiv explained that his reservations about Ranbir’s casting, stating that he thought the actor was a better fir for a role of Lord Krishna than Lord Rama. While insisting that his thoughts about the matter were 'personal', he explained, "For me, Lord Ram represents Maryada Purushottam - the epitome of virtue, dignity, restraint and ideal conduct. My understanding of Lord Rama is quite different from that of Lord Krishna, who is playful, mischievous and full of leela, whereas Ram carries a certain gravity, discipline and serenity."
Shiv, however, explained that his comments were not a criticism of Ranbir’s acting capabilities. "I feel Ranbir has qualities as an actor that could perhaps lend themselves very well to a character like Lord Krishna, but when I visualize Lord Rama, I see someone much more restrained, serious and inwardly composed. It is not a comment on Ranbir’s abilities as an actor; it is about the particular image and temperament I associate with Lord Rama,” he said.
On Arun Govil, who played Rama in Ramanad Sagar’s Ramayan, playing King Dasharatha in the film version, Shiv said that he did not believe he was the only actor capable of playing the role. “There may have been other actors who could have brought something wonderful to the role," he said, and went on to add, "But I do understand the thinking behind the casting. Having Arunji associated with the project is also a way of acknowledging his extraordinary connection with Ramayan and the audience."
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana: Part 1 stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Arun Govil as Dasharatha. The film is slated for a worldwide theatrical release in India on November 8, on the occasion of Diwali.
