Actor-director Kunal Kemmu on Wednesday said approaching mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore for a cameo in his upcoming movie Vibe was a shot in the dark and she was gracious enough to do the part.

Kunal, who is married to cinema icon's daughter Soha Ali Khan, recalled how his mother-in-law asked him for the film's synopsis before saying yes.

"It was a shot in the dark. I asked her that there was this part, it was a cameo, and if she would play that part. And she said, 'Can I know the synopsis of the film?' So then I told her. And she said that was a trick question, she was going to do it anyway,” he said.

"She was gracious enough. And I think it's one of those check boxes that I got to tick off. I'm very happy and proud that I could call action and cut on a legend like her," Kunal told reporters at the trailer launch of the film.

Vibe, his follow-up to the 2024 film Madgaon Express, is a spy comedy that features him as a man who is roped in for a secret mission against his will. The movie also stars Sparsh Srivastav of Laapataa Ladies fame as his friend and actor Preity Zinta as a seasoned spy named Madam H.

Kunal said whether one likes it or not, the box office performance of a film is like a report card for a filmmaker and determines their next project.

"Based on this, you will get a chance. You will get budgets ahead. And you will get a chance to make films. If you don't make good films, they won't trust you. If you make bad films, they will still trust you. So, I mean, it's all correlated,” he said.

"I think that's the best and the worst thing about box office. And that's how theatres have always worked. So, that's why I think it's more important now because today, you get a chance to think that now again the time has come when films are being made on content,” he added.

Produced by Kunal and Chirag Nihalani under the banner of Drongo Films, Vibe is an Amazon MGM Studios film. It will be released in theatres on September 18.
