Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s upcoming spy-comedy Udta Teer will not be releasing in Nepal as it has been denied permissions by the country’s Censor Board.
As per Nepal’s local news website, onlinekhabar, the country’s ministry informed the film’s distribution company, National Cine Group through an official letter that the film had failed a review by Nepal’s Central Film Censor Board, which found it in violation of a provision of the country’s cinema law.
The letter mentioned that the Central Film Censor Board found Udta Teer’s content fell under restrictions specified in Section 8(3) of the National Cinema (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026. Under this provision, the film has been banned in Nepal.
As per Nepal’s film writer and critic Samipyaraj Timilsina, the Central Film Censor Board reportedly prohibited the film from release because its storyline revolves around tensions between India and Pakistan. The onlinekhabar report further states that Samipyaraj said Nepal has provisions to restrict films that could harm the image of another country or adversely affect relations with friendly nations.
Udta Teer tells the story of a proficient Pakistani spy (Ayushmann) who enters India to infiltrate its security systems. However, a predicament occurs when this spy loses his memory after a mission and develops nationalistic feelings towards India. He even joins the country's counter-terrorism unit and unknowingly becomes a double agent.
Udta Teer also features Gulshan Grover, Ram Kapoor and the late Mukul Dev, Rahul Bose, Suhail Nayyar, Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Sandeep Anand, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Smita Tambe. Directed by Aakash Kaushik, the film is a joint collaboration between Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment led by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, respectively.
The film is scheduled to release on October 23.
