Actor-producer Genelia Deshmukh, who has worked alongside Vijay in Sachein (2005) and Velayudham (2011), has praised Vijay for his victory in the recently-concluded Tamil Nadu state assembly elections and called it a major win for the people in the state.
In an exclusive conversation with India Today, Genelia said, "I think it’s amazing. His victory is a win for the people of Tamil Nadu, and I’m sure he will live up to the expectations people have from him."
Vijay's TVK recently emerged as the single largest party in the recent elections with 108 seats, but the actor-turned-politician was unable to secure a majority. After finalising a post-election coalition with the Congress, taking his seat count to 113, Vijay sought a green signal to take the oath as the chief minister and prove his majority in the floor test. However, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, has rejected the same, citing doubt over the party proving a majority.
While the VCK, CPI and CPM, along with IUML expressed interest in joining hands with TVK, the VCK and IUML backed away at the eleventh hour. Another twist in the tale emerged when TVK submitted an AMMK MLA's support, leading to a tense scenario between Vijay and TTV Dhinakaran's parties with the latter claiming that the signature that they brought was forged. Hence, uncertainty still remains over the political scenario in the state.
