‘Sarke Chunar,’ the Hindi version of a song from the upcoming Kannada film KD: The Devil that was released on Saturday, received severe backlash on social media for its suggestive lyrics that bordered on obscene. Now, following the backlash, the makers have pulled down the Hindi version from YouTube.
Composed by Arjun Janya, the ‘Sarke Chunar’ song features Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt in the music video. Raju Sundaram is the choreographer.
Earlier on Monday, notable film personalities like filmmaker Onir and composer-singer Armaan Malik took to X page to express their displeasure about the song’s content. Armaan posted, “This showed up on my timeline and I had to replay it just to make sure I heard it right. Sad to see commercial songwriting hit a new low.” Meanwhile, Onir penned on his X page, “Strange country we are becoming... opposing Valentine's day celebration, interfaith marriage/ celebration while ok with this rubbish.
Additionally, many film-goers on social media shared their critical views of the song. An X user with the handle 'Incognito_River' posted, "Vulgar songs keep getting made,& then people act shocked when 10-year-old boys end up molesting or raping women & girls. Anyone who believes cinema has no influence on impressionable minds is either naive or complicit in the degrading culture they’re helping create, support,& promote."
It is to be noted that the other language versions are still available on YouTube, including the Kannada version which too was criticised by a small audience section for its lewd lyrics.
Meanwhile, KD: The Devil is set for a theatrical release on a pan-India scale on April 30. The gangster drama, inspired by true events from 1970 to 1975, is produced by Venkat K Narayan under KVN Productions. The cast includes Shilpa Shetty, V Ravichandran, Ramesh Aravind, Dhruva Sarja, and Reeshma Nanaiah.
