One of the main criticisms of director Homi Adajania's Cocktail 2 has been around Kriti Sanon's character in the film. Many audiences have compared it unfavourably to Deepika Padukone's character in the 2012 film, also directed by Homi Adajania. According to them, they have missed the vivacious quality and depth that Deepika brought to the role of Veronica.

Kriti Sanon has now responded to the comparisons between Deepika's Veronica in the 2012 film and her character in its so-called spiritual successor. In a conversation with Filmfare, Kriti said that he is not concerned by the comparisons and that she expected it to happen, because Cocktail 2 is part of a broader franchise.

"It’s kind of obvious, as I’m doing a film which is a franchise to the film that she’s done before. The characters, somewhere, have a similar energy of being slightly disruptive, unhinged and free-spirited," Kriti said.

The actor also noted that her character in Cocktail 2, namely Ally, is unlike Veronica and that she is happy for it. "Ally has her own personality even though it may seem like it’s coinciding somewhere. She’s a completely different person than Veronica," Kriti said after rhetorically suggesting that it would have been senseless for her to play the same role as Deepika's from the 2012 film. "That’s what’s fresh about Cocktail 2. It’s a completely different story with completely different conflicts and different characters," Kriti added.

Interestingly, Kriti Sanon said that she would have chosen Deepika Padukone’s character if she were to do the 2012 film. Addressing whether she would have chosen Deepika Padukone or Diana Penty’s role, Kriti went with Veronica. Kriti noted, "Veronica had a lot of depth and damage. There was a whole arc and many layers to her character. It was a slightly edgier role for that time."

Also starring Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, Cocktail 2 has grossed more than 115 crore from theatres worldwide. Despite the criticism, it has performed well so far at the worldwide box office.
