Director Homi Adjania's film Cocktail 2 has opened in theatres to mostly negative reviews. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon, the film failed to impress most of the critics, who found it a hollow offering. However, it has opened really well in theatres worldwide. According to its production banner, Maddock Films, it has grossed 53.4 crore over the first two days of its release.
According to the producer, the Cocktail 2 box office collection jumped from 24 crore on Friday to 29.4 crore on Saturday. "It's a cocktail party at the box office," the producer wrote in the poster announcing the box office collection for the film, billed as a spiritual sequel to 2012's Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty starrer Cocktail.
The data from the industry tracker Sacnilk closely matches the aforementioned figures. According to Sacnilk, the film has minted 50.95 crore from theatres worldwide over the first two days of its release. Sacnilk data shows that it earned 35.70 crore from theatres in India and 15.25 from cinema halls outside the country.
It is worth noting that neither the producer nor the tracker has accounted for the figures from this Sunday.
The makers of Cocktail 2 faced much flak shortly before the release of the film when they put out a video for the 'Tumhi Ho Bandhu' remix. Titled 'Tumhi Ho Bandhu 2.0,' the song courted criticism for the picturisation, which its critics found bland. The critics called out the use of a green-screen set for the song and its choreography, which they argued pales in comparison to the 2012 original.
The criticism followed for the film, which follows Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna's characters. However, despite the negativity, the film has been doing well in theatres so far. It now remains to be seen how the film fares in the coming days.
