Last week, actor-comedian Rajpal Yadav surrendered before the Tihar Jail authorities after the Delhi High Court refused to extend the deadline related to his conviction in cheque-bounce cases. Before surrendering, however, Rajpal made a remark which showed how much of a lonely battle it has been for him over the years.
As per NewsX, the actor was visibly emotional and said, “Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta. Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain.” (Sir, what should I do? I don’t have the money. I see no other option. Sir, here we are all alone.)
His remark though touched the heartstrings of some in the industry. Actor Sonu Sood came out in support. Taking to social media, Sonu wrote, "Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us..producers, directors, colleagues to stand together."
Sonu revealed that "a small signing amount" would be paid to Rajpal out of "dignity" and not as an act of "charity", and that it could be adjusted against his future work as an actor. "When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he’s not alone. This is how we show we are more than just an industry," he added. Bihar politician Tej Pratap Yadav also announced a Rs 11 lakh aid for Rajpal.
For the unversed, the case is associated with Rajpal's failure to pay back a Rs 5 crore loan to Murali Project Pvt Ltd. He took the loan to help fund his 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata, which he directed and starred in. The film's box office failure led to a situation where many cheques that the actor issued bounced, causing litigation against him.
Following his conviction, the High Court allowed for a settlement instead of a sentence in 2024, but further delays in repayment led to the court asking the actor to surrender himself before the authorities.
On the work front, Rajpal was last seen in films such as Baby John (2024) and Interrogation (2025). He will next appear in Akshay Kumar’s horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla, which is slated for release on April 10.
