The trailer of Roshan Mathew and Mohit Raina’s upcoming psychological-thriller show Kankhajura was unveiled by the makers on Wednesday. It is an Indian adaptation of the Israeli series Magpie (2019) and also stars Sarah Jane Dias, Mahesh Shetty, Ninad Kamat, Trinetra Haldar, Heeba Shah, and Usha Nadkarni in pivotal roles.
The trailer opens at a small party where Mohit’s character, Max introduces everyone to his brother Ashu (Roshan), who has come out of jail after 14 years. It is revealed that Ashu was part of some gang where others would make a fool out of him. He seems to be going through some amount of psychological trauma as he is shown being submerged forcibly in water. There is a certain vulnerability that he carries and even stutters sometimes. Ashu wants to work for Max and gets involved in some assignment. Max warns him at one point to not talk to any of his family members. “You are my brother, talk to me,” Max says. Ashu has a disturbing quality to him where something sinister seems to be hiding behind his innocent face.
Speaking about the show, Sarah said in a press release, “There’s something deeply unsettling about Kankhajura, not just the story, but what it forces you to confront- guilt, family, and memory. Nisha is a character who’s trying to hold it all together while everything inside her is falling apart. It wasn’t easy to play a character that is so nuanced and layered, but it was empowering.”
Directed by Chandan Arora, the show has been reimagined under license from yes Studios by creators Adam Bizanski, Omri Shenhar, and Dana Eden and produced by Donna and Shula Productions.
It is set to be released on Sony LIV on May 30.
