Aamir Khan’s feel-good comedy Sitaare Zameen Par is faring well at the box office. As per industry tracker Sacnilk. com, the film barely managed to get a double digit opening on Friday with Rs 10.7 crore. The collections, however, jumped to a double on Saturday at Rs 20.2 crore. On Sunday, the film raked in Rs 29 crore as per rough estimates. This brings Sitaare Zameen Par’s first weekend collection to Rs 59.9 crore. This haul is net and across languages.

While the film has been released in multiple languages — Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu — the core audience remains in the Hindi belt. It saw 50.70 percent Hindi occupancy, 41.59 percent Tamil occupancy and 21.92 percent Telugu occupancy on Sunday.

Comparing to other films this year, Sitaare… trails behind Chhaava which made Rs 116.5 crore in its first weekend and the recent release Housefull 5 whose opening three-day collection was Rs 87.5 crore. Sitaare…, however, has surpassed first three days collection of Raid 2 (Rs 49.25 crore), Kesari: Chapter 2 (Rs 29.5 crore) and Jaat (Rs 26.25 crore). The film will also soon surpass the lifetime collection of Aamir’s last Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs 61.36 crore).

Sitaare Zameen Par has been directed by RS Prasanna. It also features Genelia Deshmukh and Dolly Ahluwalia.

The film had mixed reception from the critics. Our review of the film read: “Sitaare Zameen Par has its heart in the right place but it often wears it on its sleeve. It becomes didactic, spelling out lessons to the viewer rather than letting them make a journey of their own. It is too eager to reverberate with the masses, so desperate for a group hug that it often overlooks the intimacy of just holding hands.”
