Aamir Khan is not only one of Hindi cinema's most successful actors, but he has also backed some of the most profitable films in the industry, the most recent example being Laapataa Ladies. However, the actor-producer attributed such successes to pure luck, and he said that he does not approach any project with confidence or certainty about its success. Speaking at Jeddah's Red Sea Film Festival, Aamir said, "Each film I pick, I’m nervous I’ll be able to pull it off."
Aamir could star in and produce virtually any project of his wish. And despite the Mr Perfectionist tag he often gets, he acknowledged that even the tiniest of mistakes in a film could prove costly. An example would be his recent production Laal Singh Chaddha. In a candid admission, the actor, who also produced the Forrest Gump remake, said that the film did not work for most because of his "weak performance".
At the Jeddah festival, Aamir also discussed his reluctance to back films in his early years as a producer. He put it down to his first-hand experience watching his producer father, the late Tahir Hussain, "going through hell" in "a thankless job." It was also skepticism about a producer that made him back Lagaan, his iconic cricket-based drama with director Ashutosh Gowariker. "I was afraid the producer would start arm-twisting the director," said Aamir. However, when Lagaan became successful, it convinced him to venture more into film production, like his father and many others in the industry.
"I thought look at the filmmakers you look up to, all of these directors. they took risks, they went with their heart."
Aamir's upcoming projects include Sitaare Zameen Par, the RS Prasanna directorial and a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par that the actor stars in and produces.
