With the passing of Asha Bhosle earlier this Sunday, the overarching sentiment is that it marks the end of an era. Asha's career coincided with many great singers in Hindi cinema, including Mohammed Rafi, her sister Lata Mangeshkar, and Kishore Kumar, among others. In a remarkable coincidence, both Asha and Lata passed away on the same day (Sunday) and at the same age (92 years).

The relationship between Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar is among the most fascinating and curious cases in Indian entertainment—one characterised by a longstanding and perceived professional rivalry, a personal feud, mutual admiration, and the ultimate sisterhood. It is said that they were not in talking terms for a long time following Asha's elopement with Ganpatrao Bhosle, her sister's secretary, and rumours about a professional rift between the two did the rounds, too. Ultimately, their strong sibling bond prevailed, bringing an end to the break in their personal relationship. Asha once supported her sister after she reportedly threatened to leave India for Dubai out of frustration over the proposed Pedder Road flyover project adjacent to her residence in Mumbai.

Asha also admitted in multiple platforms that she frequently felt overshadowed by her sister, whom she always held in high regards. The legendary singer also revealed that the industry often overlooked her. Part of the perceived rivalry boiled down to an industry that often forced composers to choose sides. Nevertheless, she often called Lata her favourite singer.

The similar voices of Asha and Lata also led to unavoidable comparisons. The frequent parallels explain why Asha Bhosle expanded her repertoire to include pop, ghazal, bhajan, qawwali, folk music, and more. Asha recognised early on that it would be difficult for her to establish herself in the industry if she had not become versatile in her craft. While Lata Mangeshkar is often considered the 'Queen of Melody' and known for the emotional depth she brought to her songs, Asha is admired more for her versatility.

Lata also appreciated her sister's abilities, once famously admitting in an interview with The Hindustan Times that she could not do what Asha could in front of the microphone. In the conversation, Lata dismissed speculation about a rivalry between them. She said, "I can never sing 'Piya Tu Ab To Aaja' or 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko' the way she can. My point is, we had our own individual space as singers. Why would we be seen as rivals?"

The sisters have also collaborated on multiple songs, including duets such as 'Main Chali Main Chali' and 'Man Kyoon Behka Re Behka Aadhi Raat Ko,' to name two. Now that they are both no more, one can only cherish the songs they have etched for eternity in the annals of Indian music.
