Actor John Leguizamo is expected to star in director Joseph Kosinski's upcoming film Miami Vice ’85, according to a Deadline report. Reportedly, the actor, most popular for his roles as Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age franchise and Luigi Mario in 1993's Super Mario Bros, is set to portray a cartel leader in the film. The film, which hails from Universal Pictures, takes inspiration from the popular television series Miami Vice's pilot episode. It is worth noting that Leguizamo played the vengeful son of a cartel boss in the television series at the beginning of his acting career. The actor is expected to join Austin Butler and Michael B Jordan in the film's cast, in addition to Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, and Alden Ehrenreich.
With a Dan Gilroy screenplay, Miami Vice ’85 is set in the glamorous and corrupt world of Miami in the 1980s mid. Production on the film is set to commence later this year, with the shoot also planned for IMAX screens. The makers eye a May 19, 2028, release.
Dylan Clark is attached to produce the film through his eponymous banner alongside Joseph Kosinski. Gilroy’s screenplay is based on Anthony Yerkovich's characters from Miami Vice and builds on a previous draft by Eric Warren Singer.
The upcoming film brings John Leguizamo back together with Universal Pictures following their collaboration on this year's blockbuster The Odyssey. In director Christopher Nolan's film, which is still running in theatres, Leguizamo portrays a blind character who serves as a loyal ally to Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, played by Matt Damon. He is also part of Universal Pictures' The Exorcist film, directed by Mike Flanagan and co-starring Scarlett Johansson, and the studio's own film with director duo The Daniels and Matt Damon.
