The American Film Institute announced on Thursday that it will present Tom Cruise with the AFI Life Achievement Award. The award recognises Cruise's contributions to cinema as an art form. Making the announcement, the institute wrote in the caption, “AFI is proud to name Tom Cruise as the 52nd recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award. Join us on April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood as we celebrate the global icon and his extraordinary contributions to the art of film.”

The news comes about a year after The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Cruise as a recipient of its Honorary Oscar. He won the honorary recognition back then for his “unwavering commitment to the filmmaking community," his "vital support of the theatrical experience," and his "unmatched body of work." The announcement also comes at a time when Cruise is having a rough time as a major international hero, with his recent film Digger failing to perform well at the box office.

According to reports, the film from acclaimed director Alejandro G Inarritu has only earned about $40 million from theatres worldwide, way below its reported budget of approximately $130 to $180 million. It is regarded as Cruise's worst-performing film in theatres since 2007’s Lions for Lambs.

Tom Cruise is yet to win an Academy Award for his performances in any film. However, the AFI Life Achievement Award is regarded as one of the highest recognitions in cinema. Considering the actor's lack of Oscars, fans have been welcoming the news regarding the AFI Award wholeheartedly, saying it is a “long overdue” recognition for the world's biggest superstar. Cruise is yet to respond to the news publicly.
