There is a speculation that Kane Parsons has not directed the upcoming horror film Backrooms. The rumour is that it has been 'ghost directed' by an experienced producer, and it stems from the fact that Parsons is still in his adolescence. It has intensified, with only a few days to go for the release of the horror film in India, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, among others. Kane Parsons is credited as the Backrooms director, but an X user suggested that he has not helmed the film. Quote-tweeting a trade report about the upcoming film, the user wrote, "Promising but we all know Kane Parsons absolutely didn’t direct this movie. But the needle is moving in the right direction."
Responding to the user, actor Mark Duplass, who plays a role in the upcoming film, wrote, "Hmmm, with all due respect I don't remember seeing you on set. When I was there, Kane was 100% in control. More so than many directors 3x his age."
The user clarified his stance, saying, "I appreciate you responding Mark but it’s also wild how my point has been misconstrued to imply I don’t think Kane is talented enough. I’m simply saying studio execs are wildly risk averse and that leads me to be skeptical."
Duplass got back at the user, writing, "I think that definitive, unverified statements like "we all know Kane Parsons didn't direct this movie" are the problem here. No hard feelings. I understand this platform is inherently flawed. Best to you, friend."
Filmmaker Sophy Romvari, known for helming Blue Heron, also weighed in on the discourse around Backrooms. "Jealousy fuels so much of this type of discourse about age and success. That said, I can confidently say I'm very glad I made my first feature at 34 instead of in my 20's -- I'm a much better filmmaker now," Romvari wrote.
The film's release has been postponed, thus avoiding a direct clash with the other horror film Obsession.
