The casting for the next James Bond has officially been kickstarted by Amazon MGM. Confirming the news, the studio said, "While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right." While the makers have remained tight-lipped on further details, the right person with the mysterious aura and signature black suit is being auditioned by well-known casting director Nina Gold. She has previously worked on HBO's Game of Thrones, Netflix's The Crown and five films in the Star Wars franchise.
Debbie McWilliams played a key role as casting director on the The Living Daylights, GoldenEye, and Casino Royale, where she helped select Bond actors including Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Other actors who famously portrayed James Bond include Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and George Lazenby.
In June last year, it was announced that Dune and Blade Runner 2049 creator Denis Villeneuve will direct the next instalment in the James Bond franchise. Acclaimed screenwriter Steven Knight is penning the new film which is backed by Amy Pascal and David Heyman. Tanya Lapointe serves as executive producer. Further details have been kept under wraps.
Rumours have swirled around names like Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner and Louis Partridge, though no official shortlist has been confirmed. Whoever ultimately takes on the role will follow in the footsteps of Daniel Craig, whose tenure across five films, including Casino Royale and Skyfall, is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s strongest eras. Craig exited the series with 2021’s No Time to Die.
The stakes are high for Amazon, which acquired MGM Studios in 2022 for over $8 billion, with the Bond franchise being a key asset in that deal. The upcoming film, often referred to as Bond 26, is expected to be a major tentpole for the studio.
During its recent CinemaCon presentation, the studio offered a measured update, making it clear that patience is part of the process. Courtenay Valenti, head of film at Amazon MGM Studios, addressed the speculation directly. “Now, I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond,” she said, before tempering expectations. “Don’t get too excited. Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”
