Just one week is left for The Boys to come to an end, and audiences were shocked with the biggest twist at the end of the penultimate episode. While fan theories are already going wild on social media, some have also expressed their disappointment in the show's finale season.
The creator of the series, Eric Kripke, has now opened up about the shocker twist at the end of episode 7. Tread with caution ahead, as this article contains spoilers for the latest episode of The Boys.
Episode seven ended with the demise of one from the original boys' gang, the Frenchman. Frenchie (Tomer Capone) sacrifices his life for his lover, Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), when he is confronted by Homelander. Speaking about ending the arc of one of the original boys, Kripke said the move was inevitable. "We knew we had to kill one of The Boys," he explained.
He then said that popular films and shows like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones have done it well. "You can’t have a shot at victory unless it costs your heroes something that’s really hard. I always think The Lord of the Rings was so good at that and Game of Thrones was so good at that. For narrative momentum, your heroes have to pay a steep price — because that’s how it works in the real world."
Frenchie became the inevitable choice because the creators thought his demise would be the most heartwrenching. "So it was going through each character and deciding what was going to be the most heart-wrenching. I think we knew early on it was going to be Frenchie. In so many ways, Frenchie and Kimiko are the heart of the show. Despite what killers they are, they’re both so emotionally sweet. We knew this would have real maximum destruction, and I think it had to happen. They would not have a chance of winning if Frenchie didn't sacrifice himself.”
Multiple theories for the finale episode suggest that more members of the original gang will lose their lives in order to put an end to Homelander. Of the lot, Kimiko is speculated to be playing a key role in defeating the laser-eyed fascist supe. However, a week's time will tell how Kripke and team have decided to wrap up the long-running series.
