Paul Thomas Anderson, who bagged three Oscars—Best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay—for One Battle After Another on Sunday, addressed criticisms surrounding the film's portrayal of Black women after receiving the trophies.
The filmmaker was asked by members of the press about the criticism over the racial politics surrounding Perfidia Beverly Hills, portrayed by Teyana Taylor. He explained. “I know a little bit about that critique. I know that Teyana has talked about it a lot. I know that we have the portrayal of many different characters. In particular her character, who was so flawed and unfortunately makes decisions that are detrimental to the revolution that she’s trying to fight. It’s complicated. We always knew that we were trying to make something complicated. We knew that we weren’t making something that was heroic, and we needed to lean into that. We need to own the fact that this woman was suffering not only from postpartum depression, but also had issues of her own that she hadn’t really reconciled with.”
On how Perfidia is a hero who turns into an anti-hero in the film, he continued, “It’s a very dangerous thing when you start out and want to change the world, but you start to kind of become selfish; you read your own reviews. That was our hero in Perfidia, who becomes an anti-hero. The point of it is to set up a story of [Chase Infiniti’s character] Willa, the next generation. What happens when your parents, who are damaged and have handed quite a difficult history to you? How do you manage that? That's our story. Our story is in Chase, and her reaching, like I talked about in terms of the generational aspect, is trying to do better.”
Besides Best Picture and Director, One Battle After Another also won for Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, and Best Editing. After receiving the awards, which marks his first Oscar recognition since he started his career 30 years ago with Boogie Nights, a visibly emotional Paul Thomas Anderson went to the stage. "I’m incredibly honoured to be a part of this history," he said, thanking and expressing his gratitude to author Thomas Pynchon, whose book inspired the film.
