Audiences have encountered green-skinned characters before, but Frankenstein stands apart. Last night, Frankenstein proved that some stories are truly immortal, taking home three Academy Awards and demonstrating that horror belongs on the world’s biggest stage. Building on its memorable presence, Frankenstein won all three technical category Oscars for its Best Costume Design (Kate Hawley), Best Makeup and Hair styling (Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey), and Best Production Design (Tamara Deverell) from nine nominations in the 98th Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Frankenstein filmmaker Guillermo del Toro spoke, "definitive retelling of Mary Shelley's genre-defining novel of life and death" is described as "an epic drama about what it means to be human, to crave love, and seek understanding." Costume designer Kate Hawley received her award from Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour and expressed her gratitude to Guillermo del Toro for his visionary work. She even told him the win was basically his, too. The hair and makeup crew gave a shout-out to Jacob Elordi for spending 400 hours in the makeup chair to transform into the creature. Elordi just smiled and did a first pump from his seat.
