Drew Goddard, who was tapped to write and direct the fifth instalment in The Matrix series, cleared the air on the fate of the sequel. Goddard spoke about the sequel in an interview, two years after he was confirmed to be the director.

"I'm in my writing cave writing. I don't know how long I'll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I'll have news to share," said the director in an interview to Screenrant, reconfirming that the film is still in the works.

Another Matrix sequel in development

Created by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, the first instalment, The Matrix, was released in 1999, and followed Neo, as he discovers a world beyond reality, and his fate in it. Two more films, The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003), was made with The Wachowskis directing both.

Later, The Matrix Resurrections, was released in 2021, and was directed by Lana Wachowski, who wrote the film along with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon.

Goddard, who has created and written for Netflix's Daredevil, has written and directed The Cabin in the Woods (2011) and Bad Times at El Royale (2019). He has also written for Cloverfield (2008), World War Z (2013), and The Martian (2015). Goddard has also served as a writer on the upcoming science fiction film, Project Hail Mary, which stars Ryan Reynolds in the lead.
