It has been 25 years since the release of the The Matrix, and fans of the Wachowski Brothers' science-fiction film have exciting news coming their way. According to a Variety report, Warner Bros. is working on the fifth part to the Matrix franchise. It will be the first Matrix film to not feature Lily or Lana Wachowski as the director. Drew Goddard, best known as the scenarist of The Martian, will helm the film. He will write and direct the tentatively titled Matrix 5, in addition to producing it with his Goddard Textiles partner Sarah Esberg. The Matrix Resurrections director, Lana is attached to the project as its executive producer.
The Matrix, starring Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves, tells the complex tale of a computer hacker living in a simulated world and fighting for humanity's freedom. The film is known for its world-building, with inventive setpieces and wall-to-wall action. It also features Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, Paul Goddard, and Joe Pantoliano in the ensemble cast. The most recent instalment, The Matrix Resurrections features Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Neil Patrick Harris. It is unclear as to which of the actors from the earlier Matrix instalments will reprise their roles in the fifth part.
Plot details are still under wraps, but Jesse Ehrman of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures teases that its story will take the Matrix fantasy world forward without moving too far away from what turned it into a successful franchise.
