Director Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, The Odyssey, has received an 'R' rating from the Motion Picture Association. It becomes the fourth film in the director's career to have this rating, with the other three being Memento, Insomnia, and Oppenheimer. On the other hand, films such as Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy, Dunkirk, and Tenet were all rated 'PG-13' only.
Reportedly, The Odyssey has become the most expensive R-rated film of all time. Previously, titles such as Deadpool and Wolverine and Joker: Folie à Deux held this distinction. According to reports, the film is made on a whopping $250 million budget. It is also the most expensive film in Christopher Nolan's career.
The news about the 'R' rating comes about a month ahead of the release of the film, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson, among others. Based on an eponymous poem by Homer, it follows the titular King of Ithaca's (Damon) perilous journey back home following the Trojan War.
Recently, the makers of the film integrated a feature into the official website for it that allows the audience to watch its trailer in different aspect ratios. The feature is accessible from the so-called "Explore Formats" page of the official website. The aspect ratios include IMAX 70 mm, IMAX 1.90:1, 70 mm 2.20:1, 35 mm 2.39:1, Dolby Vision 1.85:1/2.39:1, and Large Format 1.85:1/2.39:1.
Nolan shot The Odyssey entirely with new IMAX camera technology, thus making it the first film to hold this distinction. In a video, Matt Damon recommended watching the film in an IMAX theatre. Explaining why people should do this, he said, "When you are in the theatre, you will feel the full impact of how it was shot. So you will on the odyssey with all of us. Experience The Odyssey in IMAX 70 millimetre."
The film is slated for a July 17 release in theatres.
