Christopher Nolan has directed films in multiple genres, including war cinema (Dunkrik), thriller (Memento, Insomnia, and The Prestige), sci-fi (Inception, Interstellar and Tenet), superhero cinema (The Dark Knight trilogy), and a blend of adventure, action, and fantasy (The Odyssey). Although conventional and conversational dramas are not his forte, he has also shown his ability to tackle it in films such as Insomnia and Oppenheimer. Recently, the filmmaker expressed his interest in directing a horror film, saying that Oppenheimer and The Odyssey have horror elements.
However, there is a genre that terrifies even a filmmaker as astute as Christopher Nolan. In a recent conversation with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Nolan said that he would be "terrified" of making a romantic-comedy film.
The filmmaker explained, "I think doing a rom-com would be incredibly difficult. I love watching those movies. But, no, I think people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world to make people laugh that way."
Nolan admitted that the type of films he usually makes may not be suitable for everyone's tastes. "If I show a film to people and maybe they don’t respond to bits of it, I’m like, ‘Ah, they don’t get it. Whatever.’ There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy," the writer-director revealed.
Nolan's comments come at a time when The Odyssey is doing remarkably well in theatres around the world. In its second week of release now, the film has earned 129.15 crore from theatres in India, according to data from the box office tracker Sacnilk. On the other hand, according to reports, the film has earned more than $350 million from theatres worldwide.
