On Monday, DC Studios co-head and Superman filmmaker James Gunn took to his official X handle to share a photo of the superhero and wrote, "Entering the Fortress. #Superman." The message hinted at the director commencing production on Superman 2, titled Man of Tomorrow. An official announcement is awaited. Gunn wrote the script for the film and will also direct it.
Returning to the franchise are David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, reprising their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor from Gunn’s 2025 hit Superman. Rachel Brosnahan will also be coming back to the franchise as Lois Lane. It was recently revealed that German actor Lars Eidinger will be stepping into the DC Universe as the iconic supervillain Brainiac.
Gunn previously teased the Man of Tomorrow release date, July 9, 2027, with an image of Superman and Lex sharing a surprisingly friendly moment, hinting at an uneasy alliance against their new extraterrestrial adversary.
Recently, James Gunn also confirmed that Sam McCurdy, his trusted cinematographer behind his hit films Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, and The Suicide Squad, will be cranking the camera for Man of Tomorrow as well.
Earlier on Monday, Gunn clarified on Threads to a fan about Batman and Wonder Woman making an appearance in Man of Tomorrow. “No. All these rumours of Batman and Wonder Woman auditions are false," he said, adding a "Yep" when asked if Batman and Wonder Woman could still appear in the movie in some capacity.
Superman marked Gunn’s first directorial outing since becoming co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Released July 11, the film went on to earn more than $616 million globally, becoming 2025’s highest-grossing superhero title. The film had Superman facing unintended consequences after he intervenes in an international conflict orchestrated by billionaire Lex Luthor. It also starred Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.
