After many near-misses misses, Timothee Chalamet has finally won his first Golden Globe award in the category Best Male Actor in a Film for his performance in Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme, beating George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Lee Byung-hun and Jesse Plemons in the process. The 83rd edition of the ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
Chalamet won the award for his role as a fast-talking and driven table tennis player in the comedy film. While he was previously nominated for Call Me By Your Name, Beautiful Boy, Wonka, and A Complete Unknown, the actor found his charm in the Golden Globes in his fifth time.
During his acceptance speech, Chalamet spoke about lessons from his childhood and how they helped him stay positive even after past losses.
"My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up. 'Always be grateful for what you have.' It's allowed me to leave the ceremony in the past empty-handed with my head held high," he said. "I'd be lying if I said those moments didn't make this one that much sweeter," he added.
Marty Supreme is directed by Josh Safdie and follows the journey of a fictional character named Marty Mauser, who works hard to chase his dream of becoming a table tennis champion.
He also thanked his director Safdie for the role and for believing in him. He further expressed his gratitude to studio A24, screenwriter Ronny Bronstein, and his "amazing" co-stars Odessa A'zion, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, and Kevin O'Leary. "If you would have told me when I was 19 years old that I would be thanking Mr. Wonderful from Shark Tank. You're laughing, so I got away with that. Thank you Kevin," said Chalamet.
By winning this trophy, Timothee Chalamet has now become the youngest Best Actor winner at SAG, Golden Globes (Musical or Comedy) and Critics Choice.
