Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has reflected on the abrupt end of Marvel's Wonder Man, saying the show's cancellation has an unexpected parallel with the journey of his character Simon Williams. The Disney+ series, which had been renewed for a second season earlier this year, was dropped months later, with the actor saying he was told the decision was linked to its viewership numbers.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Abdul-Mateen said he was not given the actual figures behind the decision. “I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers,” he said, adding that Disney and Marvel ultimately appeared to conclude that continuing the series did not make business sense.

The actor sees an irony in the development. In Wonder Man, Simon is an aspiring actor who spends much of the story trying to land his big break, only to repeatedly come close to achieving his ambition before finally getting his opportunity. Abdul-Mateen said the show's own cancellation became another real-life example of that struggle.

“It’s a lesson in life,” he said, pointing out that Simon's story was about overcoming repeated disappointments and finally getting what he wanted. For Abdul-Mateen, the series ending despite its achievements was similarly reflective of the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry.

The cancellation came as a surprise, particularly because Disney+ had announced a second-season renewal in March. According to reports, a writers' room for the proposed season was never set up. The reversal also arrived shortly after Abdul-Mateen received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Simon.

Despite the setback, the actor said he remains proud of the series and grateful for the opportunity to have made it. He noted that he had worked on the show for the right reasons and was happy that he could still discuss it with audiences.

Abdul-Mateen also revealed that he had ideas for where Simon could have gone in a second season, although he was not involved in developing the writers' plans. He was particularly interested in exploring what would happen after Simon achieved the fame, recognition and power he had spent so much time chasing.

For the actor, that could have opened up a new side of Simon — a man with a good heart but also an ego and a desire to become a star. The question, he suggested, would have been what someone does after finally getting everything they thought they wanted.

The eight-episode series, created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, starred Abdul-Mateen alongside Ben Kingsley, who reprised his MCU role as Trevor Slattery. The show received strong critical reviews, with Abdul-Mateen's performance earning particular recognition.

Abdul-Mateen's next projects include The Adventures of Cliff Booth, David Fincher's upcoming sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in which he stars opposite Brad Pitt.

While Wonder Man will not return for a second season, Marvel has not ruled out the possibility of characters from the series appearing in other MCU projects.
