According to reports, director Destin Daniel Cretton's film Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed more than $360 million from theatres in the USA in its opening weekend, thus breaking the previous record for the period at the domestic box office held by Avengers: Endgame. Earlier this Wednesday, Avengers: Endgame directors, the Russo Brothers, congratulated the makers of the Spider-Man film on the box office achievement. "Huge congratulations to Destin, Tom, Zendaya, Jacob, Jon, Mark, Sadie, Florence, Michael, Marisa, producers Kevin, Amy, Avi, and Rachel, and the entire Spider-Man: Brand New Day cast and crew on making domestic box office opening weekend history. The gauntlet has been passed," the Russo Brothers shared.
The filmmaker duo posted the congratulatory message with a custom-made image of Spider-Man holding the King piece in chess on his right hand and the Infinity Stones on his left. The picture seems to imply that Spider-Man has checkmated Avengers: Endgame at the box office.
Despite the incredible opening for the Spider-Man film, Avengers: Endgame still holds the record of being the highest-grossing film at the US box office. Avengers: Endgame also ranks second on the list of the highest-grossing films of all time in terms of global box office numbers, second only to James Cameron's Avatar. It is worth noting that Avatar's recent release led to the film breaking the record held by the Avengers film.
As it pertains to the US box office, Spider-Man: No Way Home reportedly holds the record of being the second highest-grossing film of all time. No Way Home relied on the nostalgia factor for the Spider-Man franchise with a multiverse narrative, featuring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's titular characters from the previous films. Conversely, Brand New Day has a more independent and grounded narrative reminiscent of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films, and notably achieved the box office feat without access to IMAX screens.
