We had previously reported that a sequel for the hit 2010 film The Social Network is in the works from director Aaron Sorkin. The film, which is finally taking shape, now has a new title: The Social Reckoning. Starring Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong in lead roles, the film is set for release on October 9, 2026.

The Social Reckoning is written by Sorkin from his own script as he did for the original film, which earned him an Oscar award. In the new film, Madison plays a a young Facebook engineer named Frances Haugen who joins hands with Jeff Horwitz (White), a Wall Street Journal reporter who is on a dangerous mission to bring the social network’s biggest secrets to light. Strong returns to play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Set 17 years after the events of The Social Network, The Social Reckoning draws inspiration from Jeff Horwitz’s Wall Street Journal series “The Facebook Files”. It will explore the company’s internal findings on misinformation, its harmful effects on teenagers, and its role in the lead-up to the January 6, 2021, insurrection.

Sorkin produces The Social Reckoning along with Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser with filming expected to start next month.

Directed by David Fincher, the 2010 film The Social Network portrays the founding of the social networking website Facebook and stars Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, with Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, Armie Hammer as Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and Max Minghella as Divya Narendra. Loosely based on the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, the film was a critical and commercial success, earning eight Oscar nominations ar rge 83rd Academy Awards. It won for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Film Editing.
