Bill Burr is in negotiations to join the cast of The Social Network Part II, Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to the acclaimed 2010 drama. Sorkin, who won an Oscar for writing the original film, has penned the new script and will also direct for Sony Pictures.

Unlike the first movie, which chronicled the turbulent early days of Facebook, the upcoming drama will dive into the darker repercussions of the social media giant, now known as Meta. Drawing inspiration from Jeff Horwitz’s Wall Street Journal series “The Facebook Files”, the film will explore the company’s internal findings on misinformation, its harmful effects on teenagers, and its role in the lead-up to the January 6, 2021, insurrection.

Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, and Jeremy Strong are already attached, with deals close to completion. White is set to portray Horwitz, Madison will play whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Strong will take on the role of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Burr, meanwhile, is expected to appear as either a fictional figure or a composite character, according to insiders.

Production is slated to begin later this year in Vancouver, with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin, and Stuart Besser producing.

Burr’s addition comes at a high point in his career. The comedian and podcaster, who has received both Emmy and Grammy nominations for his stand-up work, recently headlined Netflix’s Old Dads, a comedy he also directed. The film debuted in 2023 and quickly became the platform’s most-watched worldwide release for two weeks straight, racking up nearly 30 million views in its first 10 days.

Beyond film, Burr drew praise for his Broadway debut earlier this year, performing in Glengarry Glen Ross opposite Kieran Culkin and Bob Odenkirk. He is also preparing to direct, produce, and star in his next feature, Born Losers, which he co-wrote.
