Alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn is getting plenty of appreciation in early reviews for writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film One Battle After Another. In a recent press release, Penn has spoken highly of his director, who is known for films such as Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, and The Master. Penn stated, "I think sometimes people use the words too freely, whether it's a film genius or a film great, but I suspect Paul's a film genius. He has a clear vision, yet you are never anything but free and encouraged on his set to bring your ideas. It's like he's got a secret, and he knows you're going to find the character just as he would hope you to find it."
Penn also revealed that he has seen One Battle After Another many times and described it as not a comedy but rather "its own animal". He said that the film makes him "giggle" each time he sees it. He added, "Sometimes, even in the most torturous stuff, I just find it's such a giggle because it's a view through an original mind. And I think we do not see enough of that in movies. I suspect everyone enjoys that, to really be gifted with something fresh.
The Anderson directorial also stars Benicio Del Toro, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall playing important characters. Anderson, Adam Somner, and Sara Murphy serve as the film's producers, alongside executive producer Will Weiske.
The film is slated for a September 26 release in theatres.
