The Owens family’s story is officially ready for its next chapter.
Nicole Kidman took to Instagram on Saturday to announce that Practical Magic 2 has completed production. Sharing a playful video of herself and Sandra Bullock walking into the sunset while laughing together on set, she wrote in the caption, “That’s a wrap on Practical Magic 2. Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic.”
The long-awaited sequel brings back Kidman and Bullock as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens, with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing also reprising their beloved roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny. The original 1998 film, based on Alice Hoffman’s novel, followed the sisters as they grappled with a family curse that threatens their chance at love.
Earlier this summer, Kidman teased the start of the shoot by posting another video of her and Bullock embracing, writing, “The witches are back. Owens sisters’ first day on set!”
The film’s creative team expressed excitement about continuing the story: “25 years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theatres around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next instalment in the Owens’ story to new fans and those who’ve been with us since the beginning.”
Among the new faces joining the sequel are Joey King (The Act), Lee Pace (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt), and Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai).
Not everyone from the original cast is returning, however. Evan Rachel Wood, who portrayed Sally’s daughter Kylie, revealed in July on Instagram: “I was not asked to come back and be in the Practical Magic sequel. I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line. I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
Practical Magic 2 is directed by Susanne Bier (Bird Box, The Perfect Couple) with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, co-writer of the original, and Succession writer Georgia Pritchett.
Warner Bros. has set the release date for September 18, 2026.
